2nd ESO Activities

New activities below!
pescado oriental

Hi, there! You have two weeks to do these activities, until the 26th of March. I will collecto all the work in class, but you

will have to show me your work at home by sending me a picture of it to this email address:

olga.sanchez@iespablopicasso.org

THE TOPIC WILL BE COLOUR AND ISOMETRIC NETS (redes modulares sobre una retícula isométrica).

First activity. From 16th to 20th of March.

You will imagine that you guys are famous artists and there is a big contest in which you really want to take part. The target is to create a new version of the Guernica, the painting by Picasso. You all know it, everybody knows it. But you really want to do something special and personal. How are you going to do it?  Very simple:

  • You will use an A4 drawingsheet

  • You will use any technique (collage, colour pencils, tempera, felt tip pen... or combing some of them)

  • You will decide either to use the whole picture or just part of it.

  • You need to decide how you are going to use the colour, because this will be main part of the work! Colour is a powerful element. I want you to use it to create something impressive! Don't be afraid of colour, but use it wisely.

  • Have a look at these two links to learn more:

Here you are some examples done by students:

Second activity. From 23th to 27th of March.

This time we are going to do an exercise related both to art and geometry. It's a modular design, based on a basic net composed by equilateral triangles. There you are going to build your composition. This exercise may take more than two hours... so if we go back to school on 26th, you will keep working on it, but at least you should bring done till  step

You can see below some examples, but first, lets have a look at materials and the steps you will need to follow to complete this task:

MATERIALS:

  • Isometric net (papel isométrico) you can buy it or you can even draw it. You can also downloaded here.

  • Calibrated felt tip pen.

  • Colour pencils.

  • Have a look at pages 23 th and 24th in your book.

STEPS:

  • First of all you need to create a module (it must be an original one, though you can find inspiration in my examples or on the internet.

  • Second. Then translate your module along the isometric paper, do it first with pencil, please.

  • Third. Then, as soon as you have it, you can use calibrated felt tip pens to trace it, you may want to use more than one to create beautiful effects!

  • Fourth. Then erase the pencil and start colouring, not before having try out different combinations of colour!

DUE DATE activity one: 18th March(it may not be finished, but I want to have a look at your work)

How to hand in to the teather: make a pictures and send it to this email address:

olga.sanchez@iespablopicasso.org

DUE DATE activity two: 23th March (it may not be finished, but I want to have a look at your work)

Chiaroscuro                 From 14th to 17th of April.

All right! Here we are again after our particular holidays at home! I hope you enjoy them, sure you discovered new ways of spending your time at home. Limited possibilities sometimes boost our creativity!

But let's go to the point. We have to start a new topic: chiaroscuro. You already have a presentation on the topic here, so click on the link and come back in some minutes.

Already done it? Great! Here you can enjoy some great videos.

ACTIVITY:

Now I challenge you to do two nice exercises. First of all practice a shading creating a few gray scales, three at least. One of them with HB or better 2B pencil, cretaing a perfectly soft transition between black and white, and just be creative on the other two, you could use the same pencil or calibrated felt tip pens. They don't need to be so long. Use a third of your paper. On the right part, draw a an apple or any other simple fruit or vegetable. Use graphite pencils, 2H, HB and maybe 2B, but try to work in the same way you saw in the videos, righ? Taking care of details, observing how the light reflects on the object and how the shadows create volume. You have examples of grey scales below.

What do you think about this beautiful work using dots and lines creating textures?

ACTIVITY II:

Just for those of you that love drawing, you can take a picture of a landscape, the place where you would like to be. Then make a drawing of it using cross-hatching, tramado de líneas, it is an artistic technique used to create tonal or shading effects by drawing  closely spaced parallel lines the way you can see in these examples below. If you do this you will get an extra mark, and more important, extra fun ;)

The script                 From 20th to 24th of April.

ACTIVITY I:

You are going to give your first try on video creation. For the next weeks you will be working with this content and finaly you will make a fantastic stopmotion video, but first you need to learn the basics of the audiovisual language. Below you have a scheme. You wil learn the difference between frame and shot. On the book you have more about types of shots, have a look at it!

This week you will do a mindmap using all the information available here and on the book. This is an incredible tool to learn visually and it's fun! Watch this short video and have a look at the example given done by older students; yours will not have so much information but it will help!! Don't forget to add all the information you have!

ACTIVITY II:

The second work will be a short script -guión- with an idea to make a video with the technique of stopmotion. Just the script. Next week we will go on with the project. First of all have a look at home, find objects that could be used to create your story: they could be toys, an apple and an orange, any object could be just fine if you come up with an idea, the crazier the story, the better! Just be creative! These days at home I am sure you have discovered how things can be seen from a different  point of view. Write at least have of a page. But take care of the presentation. Below you have a video on how to do a stopmotion animation, just for you to know what it is. Remember that is for next week.

Storyboard and stop motion

Due date: 7 May (you will have more time on this occasion, so I expect a great job!)

How are you filling guys? I know all this compulsory confinement at home is hard enough for you, but you are doing great!

Well, it is time to start our proyect after the script comes the storyboard.

A storyboard is kind of a comic, a series of sequenced illustrations that help to organise the narrations of the events that form a story. It is used a lot in films, animations, advertisement, etc. It is a cheap way to foresee how the film is going to look like. It looks like a comic strip but without dialogues. Here you have some examples. I just need some panels (viñetas) that will help you with the project. There you will decide the type and order of shots you are going to use in the stop motion. But don't worry, it is not necessary to do great drawings inside the panels, just something simple and clear. Have a look at this examples. Maybe with eight panels in a drawing sheet you have enough.

I will leave here several videos, first of all, about the technique and then some examples.

You can use the app Stop Motion Animation in your mobile phones to create easily your animation.

Remember, the most important thing is doing it with care and intention, the result doing it in that way, will always be nice and more important, you will be proud of it!

Follow these three principles on your project:

- Make sure the mobile is fixed while doing the pictures (you can use plasticine or something else to keep it still.

- Make at least 10 pictures per second to create a flow movement.

- If you use natural light, close to a window will probably be more beautiful but it could change during the process and that could be strange. It is easier to use a lamp to keep the same light on the whole project.

And don't forget about recording your voices in English, of course, and why not adding dome sound effects! Here you can find free resources.

Here I leave some examples. The first one, by the way, was done by students of second ESO some years ago.

Composition and photography

Due date: 21 May (you will have more time on this occasion as well)

A mindmap and 5 photographs with simple objects as you have explained below

Due date: 16th of June untill 16h..
Send the pictures to: olga.sanchez@iespablopicasso.org

Well, now that we can go out for a walk once a day, I hope you feel released. I do!

This time we are going to use again our mobil phones, to take some pictures, but the goal is going to be arranging elements on a plane, not working on a 3D world as we normally do with photographs. You will understand with the examples, actually I have seen this activity in a friend's blog, Margaprofe, and I love it!  It is so easy and so effective...

But first you are going to have a look at some concepts related to composition, here you have a mindmap I did some time ago. You are going to do your own, with the same elements.

Creating an effective composition is not easy, that is why we need to have a look at the MAIN ELEMENTS ABOUT COMPOSITION:

  • Unity

  • Balance

  • Movement and rhythm

  • Proportion

  • Unity and variety -contrast-

  • Focus -focal point of interest-

You have a wonderful video here to understand those aspects better.

Now it's time to try out what we have just learnt! Some paragraphs before I told you about the activity my college Marga ask her students to do. Here it is the link to her page. where you will find explained the work; it's a piece of cake, and it will take not so long. Find some plane objects and enjoy yourself! You will need to do 5 photographs in that way.

Photography

Due date: 29 May  (reflection on these weeks at home and the first picture)

Due date: 4 Junio  (the four next photographs)

We are about to finish the course, it's time to think about what we have learnt. As I told you many times in class, the visual resources we use to create a poster, a video, a drawing or a photograph are the same: colour, lines, texture, shapes, composition... We are going to keep working with a camera, it's faster and fun!

First of all, we will write a composition following these questions, and then take 5 selfies according to them, that's to say, a photograph illustrating your answer to each of my questions -all of them related to these weeks at home.

  • What have you been missing the most?

  • What have you learnt?  Before answering this one, you need to spend some minutes thinking!

  • What have been the most difficult for you?

  • What has been helping you in the most difficult moments? -This is something that you shouldn't forget in the future :)

  • Which good things have you discovered? (Things about you, around home...).

I know it's not as easy as taken a picture of a landscape or a pet, but it will hep you reflecting. Actually the text and the photographs are depend on each other.

It will be, obviously, a symbolic image in some cases, but it will be fun! I cannot give you examples these time, because it will be completely personal, just try to give meaning to your images. These selfportraits can be done on part of your body (hands, feet, for example), not only your face; or just your face, or the whole body... And the light can be used from the side, the front or the back. Think about the background as well. Are you going to use some objects to help you express the meaning?

I hope you enjoy this exercise!
